Plunge Into Summer Fun

Plunge Into Summer Fun
Posted on 05/22/2018

Summer always feels like the fastest and busiest season to me.  In 2018, LPS has eleven weeks of summer break.  While children are having trouble containing their excitement, almost all of us are happy that winter is over.  It felt like a really long winter this year.  So, it is time to embrace the warmer weather and get outside.  But just how are we going to make this summer memorable?  If you are looking for ideas, Dr. Steckelberg has compiled a list of summertime activities to help inspire you.  We hope that you can make this summer the best one yet!

I know that I need to have a list of activities to keep my child motivated and keep that screen time down.  Maybe you are more like George Wilson.  If so, let’s hope these activities can help occupy Dennis Mitchell for at least part of the summer!

Programs to participate in (or just use for inspiration):
Library Summer Reading Program:  This is a favorite – read books and win prizes - https://lincolnlibraries.beanstack.org/reader365

Nebraska Passport Program:  Discover businesses in Nebraska that you might not have otherwise, collect stamps and have more family time.  App and booklet based.  http://nebraskapassport.com/

Great Parks Pursuit:  Discover the outdoors and collect rubbings across Nebraska.  Explore parks that might be new to you and some that you have already loved.  Print pages from home or use their App. https://negpp.org/

Places to Explore for free:
Pioneer Park Nature Center
Trago Spray Park (20th & U Streets)
Homestead National Monument (near Beatrice)
The State Capitol

Great places to spend half a day (or more):
Lincoln Children’s Zoo
Lincoln Children’s Museum
Morrill Hall
UNL Outdoor Adventures Center

Summertime Weekly Events:
Thursday night Summer Concerts at Stransky Park  https://kzum.org/kzum-summer-concert-series-at-stransky-park-may-24-august-9/
Friday Nights Live Concert Series at Southpointe Pavilions
Saturday morning Farmer’s Market in the Haymarket
Independence Day activities – Uncle Sam Jam in Lincoln, and 4th of July in Seward
Lancaster County SuperFair - August 2-5

When you want to stay up late (shows start at 10:00pm):
Go see a Drive-In Movie:  TK-Starlite Drive In at Neligh, NE http://www.nelighdriveintheater.com/
Yes, it is a drive from Lincoln and it will be either too hot or cool down more than you expect (so bring blankets and wear layers).  Pack water to drink and chairs to sit on.
